In the 12 months since our last 101 list, the Web has evolved again. We have fresh blood in this year's choices-some redesigned, and some completely new. Pull down your bookmark list and compare notes. You map have some revising to do.

This year's sites conform to a trend among frenzied site administrators scrambling for mouse clicks-deliver a direct (and, if possible, free) benefit. Whether sites are providing services or information, the trend translates into a windfall for hurried writers who need to get their information and get back to work. It also boded well for the 2000 101 showcase.

Readers, more than 600 of them, gave us plenty of help in determining this year's field by nominating a combined 184 sites. The criteria for inclusion-that sites be current and authoritative, offer some free content and have tangible value to writersare the same as last year. Many jobs sites, a category absent last year, qualified and make their debuts on the list here. We've opted to exclude sites that were in the 1999 edition of this feature unless they underwent a substantial change. Fear not. This is not a competition of also-rans.
